On A Fly
• tarpon fly patterns
Monthly Special. Below is a collection of tarpon
flies tied in a variety of popular colors. As
a rule-of-thumb, bright colors are used in clear
waters while darker patterns are used in darker
waters. You could certainly find the fish preferring
a dark fly in clear conditions or wanting a brighter
fly in darker waters. So it's best to carry a variety.

At Sandy Morets Florida Keys Outfitters.
Our premium collection offers quality flies constructed
to withstand extreme elements and to produce in
all fishing conditions. The number of saltwater
tarpon flies available these days never fails
to boggle my mind! That fly tiers can put some hair
or feathers or lead and polymers on a hook with
thread to create lifelike patterns that trigger
a strike impulse from a gamefish is a tremendous
part of the charm of fly fishing to me.

There are a wide variety of tarpon flies available
out there from you to choose from. The classic Keys
style tarpon fly has stood the test of time. The
Stu Apte, Apte II, black death and cockroach flies
are all good producers. Bunny flies have proven
their worth. I also like flies that are made of
subdued colors. Light tans and pale yellows with
white. The lists are endless. I prefer my flies
on 02 and 03 size hooks. The hooks for tarpon must
be razor sharp and not to thin. The Mustad 3407SS
is good sturdy hook with heavy metal that can take
a good filing. All hooks must be sharpened prior
to use. Care must be taken not to make the hook
point too thin or it will bend when trying to penetrate
the hard mouth of a tarpon.

Whistler
Tarpon Flies, fly fishing, free shipping, products,
flies, fly rods, fly reels, free information, are
nearly like steelhead in that they move freely between
fresh and salt water. Tarpon can migrate many miles.
The trick is getting them to find your fly in the
muddy water. Dan Blanton has fished this area
a lot. He reasoned that if tarpon couldn't see the
fly, maybe they could hear it. He fastened large,
hollow bead-chain eyes to a bulky fly. It was an
instant success. The holes in the bead chain act
the same as air blown across an open pop bottle.
They whistle. That is what he called it, the Whistler.
Whistlers are productive anywhere tarpon hold in
deep or muddy water. We have modified the
Whistler series below for the waters of southern
Belize such as the Monkey River in flood which can
be nearly thick enough to plow. These flies are
tied with extra large eyes, and are heavily dressed
to buck a lot of water. Fluorescent feathers and
hair are combined with liberal amounts of holographic
flashabou for maximum visibility.
